September 4, 2010The longest shot in the field Haimish Hy rallied from seventh at the top of the stretch to beat Lions Story by a neck Friday in the $100,000 El Cajon Stakes for 3-year-olds at Del Mar. Ridden by Alonso Quinonez, Haimish Hy was eighth and last in the early going, moved up to seventh on the second turn and sped past the field three-wide for the win, covering the mile on the main track in 1:36.55.

September 4, 2010Ryan Bailey and Nick Symmonds both set personal bests in their track and field specialties at an international meet Sunday in Rieti, Italy. Bailey, a former McKay High School athlete, ran a personal record 9.88 in the 100 meters to finish second behind Nesta Carter of Jamaica. Carter ran 9.78 to tie Tyson Gay of the USA for the top mark in the world this year.

Track and field: Symmonds wins 800 meters in meet in Croatia
September 4, 2010Former Willamette University runner Nick Symmonds captured his first victory of the 2010 European circuit, taking the 800 meters Wednesday in an IAAF World Challenge meet in Zagreb, Croatia. Symmonds ran 1:45.37, 0.28 seconds ahead of runner-up Mansoor Belal Ali of Borneo. Job Kinyor of Kenya was third in 1:45.86.
